Our Students

Our students range in age from five through sixteen and are drawn from the schools of District Nine in the Highbridge area. Most of these schools lack funding for music or performing arts programs of their own. To date, nearly 4,000 students have auditioned for the limited number of slots available per academic year. All students attending Highbridge Voices are on a full scholarship.

Highbridge Voices' students attend rehearsals, private voice lessons, as well as music theory and history classes. The teaching faculty are graduates of some of the finest conservatories in the country including the Juilliard School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, and Berklee School of Music. The caliber of the curriculum is such that most of the students of Highbridge Voices are able to read music at an advanced high school level by their third year in the program. Students learn to sing in a half dozen languages, thus further advancing their overall educational experience and exposure to a variety of musical styles and cultures.

Highbridge Voices takes a holistic approach to children's development and growth. Students receive academic assistance in mathematics and language arts. A Saturday morning program is available to provide academic assistance to students who need more support.

Through the many hours of weekly musical training, academic assistance, and parent/teacher involvement, students develop and hone effective study habits in an atmosphere of support, structure, and caring. While performing-whether it is in front of a camera or a congregation, singing Beatles tunes or Bach cantatas-students develop poise, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. Highbridge Voices provides children, from the mean streets of the Bronx, a sanctuary where they can assemble the knowledge, tools, and, last but not least, the love of music and the arts that will serve them throughout their lifetime.
