Shawn Farrar is a Brooklyn-based Mezzo-Soprano and Teaching Artist who hails from the Midwest. She is currently a Master Teaching Artist with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and during her tenure she has worked in some capacity with nearly all of their Opera-Based Learning programs for children, throughout the Five Boroughs of New York City and New Jersey. Shawn began her career as a singer when she was an Undergraduate at Simpson College, where she also had an opportunity to sing in the chorus and perform with comprimario roles with The Des Moines Metro Opera under the baton of Dr. Robert Larsen. After finishing her undergraduate degree, Shawn moved to Chicago, where she sang with the Lira Singers, L’Opera Piccola, Milwaukee Opera Theater, American Opera Group, and Porchlight Music Theatre. She also worked with N.O.V.A on their Community and School based opera programming and maintained a private studio. She then went on to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she obtained a Master of Music in Voice Performance and worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Voice. While studying at UT, Shawn was a member of the Knoxville Opera Studio, and performed mainstage and comprimario roles with the Knoxville Opera Company as part of her residency. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Shawn taught private voice to undergraduate students at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee while maintaining a private studio in Knoxville and working as an actor with Tennessee Stage Company, The Actor’s Co-op, and Clarence Brown Theatre. In 2006, Shawn came to New York City, and has been working as a professional musician and music educator with various organizations throughout the city ever since she arrived. Prior to her employment with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Shawn was the founding music teacher at Lefferts Gardens Charter School, where she taught K-5 music, conducted 4th and 5th grade choruses, and directed and conducted a production of The Music Man, Jr. with her elementary school students. Shawn has also taught with Musication in Brooklyn, Piano School of NYC, and has worked as a Teaching Artist for On Site Opera. In addition to the classical roles in her repertoire, Shawn is a frequent collaborator with songwriter Chris Wade, and performed a solo show of his work at The Duplex. Shawn has sung frequently with Utopia Opera and Opera on Tap, and is a member of New Camerata Opera’s Camerata Piccola, which produces operas for children. Highlights of her performance history include Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, The Witch in Into the Woods, Helena in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and La chatte in L’Enfant et Sortilèges. In addition to her current responsibilities with the Opera Guild and her work as a singer, Shawn is a private voice and piano instructor and also works as a freelance stage manager.
