With temperatures in the 20s, the singers of Highbridge Voices are focused on spring. Preparations are already under way for the Highbridge Voices 2014 Benefit Concert. This one-hour performance is packed with selections that will appeal to musicians and music-lovers alike. The concert, on June 12 at Merkin Hall in Manhattan, will be a festive evening, as Highbridge Voices celebrates its sixteenth season of bringing music and academic enrichment to the South Bronx.

The theme for the first half of the program will be “Songs of the Earth” and will include Native American, Estonian and American works conveying through song the wonders of our natural world and the importance of our relationship to the environment. For the second half of the program, the students will switch gears to perform a full set of Beatles’ music. We often include popular music in our repertoire for this final set because it allows our students to develop and showcase their performance abilities. This set will incorporate choreography, solo and small group opportunities and collaboration with a band into our students’ Highbridge experience. These familiar tunes are sure to provide a healthy dose of fun for our singers and audience as well!

This year’s concert will be co-conducted and organized by our Executive and Music Director, Mary Clementi and our new Assistant Music Director, SunHee Lim. To make the evening even more festive, Alec Baldwin will be the Master of Ceremonies, and we will enjoy hearing Tony-nominated Broadway star Melissa Errico perform as well! As in previous years, the event will begin with a cocktail reception and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a concert and a short presentation, honoring our graduating seniors, Donovan Agbo, Karizma Nisbett, Bree’Ana Walker and Samaira Perez, as well as our sustaining donors for the year.

This concert is Highbridge Voices’ largest fundraising opportunity of the year. A key component in maintaining the stability and growth of our program, the Benefit Concert is the perfect event to discover what our program entails or to continue your support of our program, from the musical preparation and curriculum demonstrated by our choirs’ wonderful singing, to learning about our tutoring sessions, SAT prep and college application guidance.
